I want to look at why hypersonics have proved so difficult so far.
I'm interested in the materials needed to protect electronics at these extreme speeds and temperatures. And I want to know whether some of the much-vaunted hypersonic weapons allegedly fielded by Russia and China actually work.
I'm aware of work being undertaken in the UK on hypersonic engines but I'd like to hear from any other company that thinks it can offer answers to the very specific problems thrown up by flight at hypersonic speeds.
There should be space within the piece for some discussion of the political and military imperatives behind this attempt to master a very challenging technology. So I'm open to thoughts and opinions on these dimensions of the hypersonic race.
I'm researching this piece up until Friday 17 July.
